begun
Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 - 6:23 p.m.
So my marathon training has officially begun. It actually started last night with my official pasta dinner at Milestones (appropriate name) with AF1 and AFW. I was planning to make my official wild mushroom lasagne but then one thing came up after another and I ended up having dinner with them instead.
The goal: Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront marathon in September (with at least one half-marathon in between, most likely Mississauga.)
Winter running (-8°C)
The good:
There is no one on the street.
Not getting almost run over by cyclists who shouldn’t be on the sidewalk (related to first item.)
Not having to move over onto the grass to avoid cyclists who shouldn’t be on the sidewalk (related to first item.)
Not complaining that it is too damn hot.
Not having to wear shorts and showing off my scrawny legs.
Somehow the air feels, smells, tastes cleaner.
Watching your breath as you puff along like a little steam train.
If you can survive this you can survive anything.
The hot shower afterwards feels extra, extra good.
The bad:
It’s damn cold.
It’s damn cold.
Almost wiping out on a patch of ice (but luckily no one was watching – see first item above.)
Having to constantly suck up your snot or wipe it with the nifty “nose wipes” on the back of your official running gloves (or as sales guy calls them “hi-tech snot rags”.)
You still sweat even though it’s freakin cold and now you’re damp and cold. All this dry-fit, quick-dry, hi-tech fabric stuff is a lot of crappa-phooey. Yeah it dries faster and feels better than wet cotton but you’re still sweaty and clammy.
Running in snow (on stretches where the sidewalk still has not been ploughed yet) is like those nightmares where you are being chased and it feels like you are running in molasses.
Your glasses fog up as soon as you step inside the house.
There is major shrinkage when you try to go pee right after you finish running.
Crap, hope I don't get sick tomorrow.
