angry little manThursday, Aug. 05, 2004 - 12:05 p.m.Yesterday I went running after work and got caught in the rain, sort of. By the time I got home from work, it was still sunny but I could see dark clouds looming on the horizon. I figured they should at least hold off for a half-hour. But 2km into my run I saw that they were a lot closer, almost directly overhead but I wasn’t going to wuss out and run home. Third km and I could feel raindrops and thought this is it I’m going to be caught out in the rain wearing only shorts and T-shirt. Actually it was pretty refreshing and had a nice cooling effect. The rain never did develop into anything more than spitting and I was more soaked from sweating than from the rain. Somewhere on kilometer five I saw a couple jogging across the street. They had matching outfits right down to the matching white baseball caps and were even running in step. Awww…how cute. I’ve actually seen a couple holding hands while they were jogging. Awww…how sweet. Puke. And for once a cyclist actually rang his bell to let me know he was coming up behind me instead of almost running me over. Cyclists are supposed to ring their bell to warn you that they are coming up from behind. Actually, all bikes are supposed to be equipped with bells or horns and they shouldn’t even be riding on the sidewalks, it’s against the law (see Sidewalk Riding). Most of the mountain bike style bikes that people ride have 26” tires but then I don’t blame them for not wanting to ride on the street. Drivers in the suburbs are either not very tolerant of cyclists or they go into panic mode when they see a cyclist and have no clue as to what to do. Freakin Scarborough. Last night I finally saw Bowling for Columbine. Acksee’s review: it’s a stupid movie about stupid people. Well it wasn’t that bad, actually I guess it was pretty good. But it’s sorta like tell me something I don’t know. Yes we know Americans have easy access to guns. Yes we know there is a gun problem in the U.S. Yes we know poverty is a big problem. Yes we know certain minorities are unfavorably portrayed by the media. Yes we know the media over-hypes everything. Yes we know Canadians are laid back and easy going (mostly). Yes I know some of us don’t lock our doors (I personally do). I guess sometimes it’s good to have a movie, all 120 minutes worth, that reinforces all those issues. Now I want to go see Fahrenheit 9/11. Which brings me to another point. I’m thinking about getting rid of all the toy guns that we’ve accumulated over the years. Now come on, all little boys like to play with toy guns, whether it’s a gun-shaped piece of wood, or a toy gun built out of Lego, or a realistic looking plastic toy gun. We have a family friend who is a cop; maybe I’ll give them all to him.
