such a geekThursday, Feb. 19, 2004 - 2:30 p.m.I ordered a bunch of electronic parts from DigiKey, the Canadian division so I don't need to worry about currency conversion, duty, taxes, etc. All day yesterday I was tracking my package through Purolator's website. Real-time data kicks ass. There was an attempted delivery at 11-something and 2-something. Obviously the recently retired Madre is too busy to answer the door these days. So this morning I dropped by the Purolator depot on the way to work to pick up my package. Stores that open early kick ass (they open at 7:00AM, not that I went there at 7:00AM). All day today I've been tempted to open up the package and check out all my electronic parts (check out my parts, smiles to self). At lunch I had the box cutter out ready to slice but resisted because I didn't want to get those foam peanuts everywhere. So the cardboard box sealed with the official DigiKey tape sits unopened in my drawer. Digikey kicks ass because I ordered everything on Monday and the package was at my door on Wednesday (even though they couldn't deliver, no thanks to the Madre). From the time I placed my order I was able to track it on their website. Now my order with Newark is not such a happy story. Newark does not kick ass. I placed my order Monday and so far I have only received one email saying my order has been processed. When I log in to my account it can't even find my order. According to their inventory all the items I ordered are in stock so what's the holdup? I could get all my stuff from Sayal since they are right by my work. They carry lots of parts but their website is not very informative and I usually have trouble finding stuff in there because it's all over the place. Sayal kicks ass only because they are close and cheap. Another place close to work is Electro-Sonic. They carry lots of goodies but they are an order desk and cater more to contractors so a lot of stuff you have to buy in quantity. You can't buy 2 feet of wire; you have to buy the whole freakin 100-feet reel. What the heck am I going to do with the other 98 feet of wire? And if your order is less than $25 they charge you a $5 service fee. Electro-Sonic doesn't really kick-ass but they have a pretty good website and I like to know exactly what I'm buying so I've bought a lot of stuff from them. There is Active Electronics which doesn't carry a lot and they are expensive. And finally I wouldn't go to Radio Shack unless it was an emergency. Dang who knew I could come up with so much from just one little package? Oh-my-god I am SUCH a geek.
