dirty ears

Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 - 9:02 p.m.

So this is the start of week 2 of nightshift. Actually it started last night. I got a call from my partner (there’s only two of us on this project) at around 8:30PM and since I wasn’t doing anything particularly exciting or important on a Sunday night, I went into the fish tank. We didn’t think it would be a long night, fix a few minor details, and post a few reports. But of course things never go as planned, there was a bunch of stuff to fix and we ended up staying till 5:30AM. I crawled into bed at 6:00AM but had trouble falling asleep. Maybe it was because of the coffee I had around 1:00AM.

The rest of the weekend was basically a write-off. Sleeping strange long hours, cleaning and vacuuming, fiddling with the garage door opener. What’s the deal with that? I don’t get garage privileges and my little Honda freezes outside in the winter so I never use the garage door opener. So when it doesn’t work, who has to go fix it? I guess that’s the burden of being the guy. I spent 3 hours in the garage, which is as cold as being outside and touching bare metal without gloves on. After getting chain grease on my hands and face and grazing my knuckles, I think the garage door opener is working again.
Note to women: when a guy is out in the cold trying to fix something, do not constantly peek out of the nice, warm, heated house and ask annoying questions like “is it fixed yet?” or “what’s wrong with it?” I know you are trying to be concerned and helpful but if it was fixed I wouldn’t be sitting my freezing ass outside and if I knew what was wrong with it I would have it fixed so that I wouldn’t be sitting my freezing ass outside. And before I get lambasted, this would apply to you mechanically un-savvy men living with mechanically savvy women.

I managed to go to the speaker store on Saturday and bought some speaker wires and plugs. I also went to Brack but instead of the usual short little fellow-Asian sales guy I got some snobby unsmiling sales guy. Yeah a) I’m not paying $300 for headphones that don’t sound all that spectacular and b) if I were crazy enough to pay that much I would expect them to come in box, not the demos that have been soiled by unclean ears. But I really would like a pair of audiophile-quality headphones.

All is quiet on the nightshift, another 7 hours to go.
