night shift

Monday, Nov. 03, 2003 - 7:23 p.m.

It’s been two and a half weeks since I last updated. Sounds like some sort of confession. But I’m not the only one, it seems like a lot of people haven’t been updating recently. I can’t even begin to recall what has happened in the last two and a half weeks, maybe the last two and a half days.

I’m officially working the “nightshift”. It’s a long story but basically one of our clients is a bank and our people are not allowed into their data center until after hours which means I have to be here after hours in case anything goes wrong. Cross my fingers, knock on wood. So I will be here in the fish tank from 4:00PM to midnight barring any emergency bug fixes.

This worked out nicely today. Now I can go to all the places that would be closed by the time I normally get off work. I woke up at 9:30AM and took my time showering and getting dressed. First stop was FutureShop to buy a video cable. There was hardly anyone in the store at 10:30AM. Second and final stop was IKEA where I bought a bedside lamp since the one I have only works sometimes. I didn’t find a CD rack that was to my liking. I thought I would take it easy on my first day working nightshift, don’t want to go crazy on the shopping and bank account. Then it was home to make an egg sandwich and instant noodles for lunch. I still had time to clean my bathroom, setup the new lamp in my room, and fiddle with speaker wires. I got to work early at 2:30PM.

I may even have time to go running again. I haven’t been running in 2 weeks because by the time I get home it’s cold and dark and I’m all tired. So now I can go running at around 2:00PM, shower, rest up and then go to work. I’ve been meaning to go look at running shoes too.

On Halloween Friday SG and me decided to dress up to hand out candy at his place. I was biohazard man with my gas mask, white hooded coveralls and black rubber gloves. Some parent called me the SARS man. There was one little kid who turned and ran when he saw me. His dad tried to drag him back telling him not to be scared, it’s only a man behind the mask. Hope I didn’t scar him for life. Another parent saw me peeking out from behind the door and said, “you’re too scary” and moved on to the next house. Someone thought I was an alien. We got a lot of smiles from our costumes and some kids even said we were “cool.” SG bought the good stuff too: Coffee Crisps, Kit Kats, and Oh Henrys. Who said Halloween was just for kids?
