never make promises

Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 - 6:35 p.m.

Never make promises you don’t intend to keep. Well, it wasn’t that bad. Way back in late spring or early summer I had been talking about subwoofers with one of the fish tank friends and mentioned that if he was going to buy one to let me know so we could buy it together and try to strike a deal. Of course I was talking out of my ass because even though I wanted a subwoofer it was low on my things-to-buy list. So last week my ass talking came back to bite me…in the ass. Fish tank buddy said he was going to go buy his subwoofer and asked if I knew which model I wanted. Not wanting to be an ass-talker, I went with him on Friday to the stereo store and we both bought the same model subwoofer. That was a chunk of money I didn’t plan on spending, especially since I’ve been lusting for a kayak for the past few weeks. So even though it wasn’t a major financial setback, it was a setback for the Acksee Kayak Fund.

At least now I have a subwoofer and you won’t be hearing me whine about how I want a subwoofer. In fact after that purchase, I don’t want to be looking at audio equipment for a while, but those new front speakers, hmmmm. Okay shut up. So on Saturday morning, I finally got my hair cut and then popped into the fish tank for a couple hours and then headed down to Evergreen. That is Evergreen Canoe (and kayak) Company. I wandered around for about 5 minutes until some sales guy asked me if I needed help. I said I was just looking and ended up trying out several kayaks. Trying out meant I got to sit in them on the showroom floor but not actually paddle around in the water. Their test paddle days were over for the season but they are having a sell-off next weekend on their rentals and demos. There were a couple I was interested in so maybe I’ll head back next weekend and make the big decision.

I met up with AF1 afterwards and we headed over to MEC to look at PFDs (personal flotation devices aka life jackets to you landlubbers). They didn’t really have any that I was enthused about so I held off on that and the rest of the paddling gear. I can always wait and see if they throw in any freebies with the kayak. After MEC we wandered around some more and then headed over to the Keg Steakhouse for dinner. AF1 and me both ordered 8-ounce New York sirloin steaks with all the trimmings. That was one freakin tasty, juicy steak. I was able to clean off everything probably due to the fact I missed lunch.

This morning I had to pick up the sis from the hospital after her outpatient surgery. I had to park at one end of the hospital and find my way to the other end with only the instructions “go to the third floor and follow the red line.” This hospital wasn’t one rectangular building but made of several blocks. Well hospitals have always freaked me out what with all the dying and sickness within their walls. The scary hospital level in Silent Hill 2 didn’t help either. I haven’t been in a lot of hospitals before but I think this one was one of the older hospitals. The hallways were low and kinda empty and lifeless and had that bad fluorescent lighting. Some doors were ajar and I could peek in and see medical equipment. There were supply carts in the hallways and I was so tempted to grab some gloves and masks but getting caught stealing medical supplies in a hospital while picking up someone from outpatient surgery is not a good way to get ahead in life. I finally found my way to the third floor and the red line and the outpatient reception area only to be told I can go back to the other end of the building and drive round to the front and they would wheel the sis down.

After dropping off the sis at home I scrubbed my hands vigorously with soap because who knows what sort of diseases I picked up from pushing the elevator buttons. That’s another reason why hospitals and doctor’s offices and medical buildings in general give me the heebie-jeebies: they’re like a big disease congregation. But then when I’m out in the bush I don’t bother washing my hands, eat food that’s been dropped on the ground, and drink straight from the lake. Go figure. I went to the mall and bought a teriyaki chicken bento box for lunch and polished off the whole thing. I think it’s time to fatten up for the winter.
